Panic disorder is fairly common and affects about 2.5 million people in the U.S., or 1.7% of the adult
population between the ages of 18 and 55. Women are twice as likely as men of developing this condition.
This usually begins in early adulthood and has its associations there. The origins of panic attacks is
not specific but thought to be associated with new and uncertain events happening in ones life such as
taking a new job, ending a relationship or loss of somebody , or of having a baby, etc
Panic attacks are not in themselves dangerous to oneself directly but can be terrifying to have,
especially on an ongoing basis as they can be unpredictably triggered. This results in huge surges of
overwhelming fear which can make the person feel as though they are losing control , are going to die or
be annihilated . An attack may be started by well defined triggers or situations, but may come suddenly,
spontaneously and in greater intensity than is normally anticipated.
Panic attacks or panic disorder can be treated successfully with medication and/or psychotherapy on an
ongoing basis .Treatment by hypnotherapy is a well established route to look at and the results are there
over the history of this therapy. Hypnotherapy can reach into the subconscious areas of the mind and
therefore access deep causes to the problems thereby effecting permanent cure.
Part of the therapy and the cure is to develop an understanding and familiarity with the panic symptoms
and learn to have less fear with regard to an attack by facing the attack head on with the growing assertion
that the attack itself though terrifying in itself not harmful and that it is ultimately just a series of
sensations. Also what is a definite aid is the regime of relaxation exercises and practices such as Yoga,
Tai Chi and meditation. Even dancing and therapeutic massage can all be very powerful especially if any of
this is undertaken on a regular reliable basis.
If the condition is not attended to then it could lead to levels of depression , substance abuse or
alcoholism and even suicidal tendencies . It is important to be honest with one’s situation and reach out
in whatever way possible . If the intention is there then one will ultimately find the cure. It is the
neglect or delay to treatment that is dangerous , not the attack itself .
